A long day from El Calafate to Monte León National Park for penguins, sea lions, and Patagonian steppe wildlife, with snacks and WiFi.

“Though advertised obliquely as a 4x4 adventure, this trip was by high-clearance 32-seat truck. Nontheless, it proved appropriate for the 400 km drive diectly east from El Calafate, across morraine shingle and scrub. This journey provided a spectacular introduction to the unique Patagonian Steppe. The return trip, along sealed roads, was over 550 km and somewhat arduous. However, what disappointed was the penguin colony at Monte Leon. Supposedly 40,000 pairs of nesting birds, but aside from one or two individual stragglers, we couldn't get anywhere near them; and nor the sea lions! On top of this, the performance of the translator was poor throughout - Spanish spoken for 5-10 mins…”
